I Drink Therefore I am - A Philosopher's Guide to Wine
"I recently drank a Chianti Classico from the famous estate of Vignamaggio, where Leonardo's Mona Lisa was born, and where the clay soil and Sangiovese grape combine to produce a rich, black-cherry essence which may very well be the wine that was first called 'Chianti', back in 1404".

Great reviews for Vignamaggio wines
The wines of Vignamaggio have been given outstanding reviews by the most important specialised wine guides.
Robert Parker in Wine Advocate gives the 2005 Cabernet Franc 93 points, with these comments on the wine:
‘The wine possesses terrific density and richness owing to the old age of the vines, along with a distinct sense of Tuscan structure. Roasted coffee beans and spices emerge, lending extra dimensions to the dark fruit. A warm, resonating finish rounds out this exciting wine. Here the oak is used with great mastery, and the wine’s balance is superb.’
Parker also gives 90 points to the Riserva Castello di Monna Lisa 2006, writing that it is ‘a big, dramatic wine bursting with sweet black cherries, licorice, menthol and sweet scents of French oak.’
Parker also gave a score of 90 points to the Chianti Classico ‘Vignamaggio’ 2007 and to Wine Obsession 2006.
The Riserva 2006 has also been awarded ‘Cinque Grappoli’ by the guidebook ‘Duemilavini 2010’ compiled by the AIS in Rome, while the guide ‘Vini d’Italia’ published by Gambero Rosso gives ‘Tre bicchieri’ to the Cabernet Franc 2005.
Truly great, Vignamaggio 2006…..
From the celebrated winery ‘Vignamaggio’ near Greve in Chianti, the wines of 2006 see a return to former high quality of production(also in terms of Chianti Classico), in keeping with Vignamaggio’s prestigious history.
An inspired Cabernet Franc without affectation, in which dynamism and contrast are the predominant characteristics. The taste buds are left gratified from their meeting with this wine, with lingering mature fruit and grape spices: it ‘melts’ admirably on the palate, succulent and mineral. This wine also boasts an almost ‘suspended’ finish. And it certainly leaves you with the desire to drink it again.
The estate’s 2006 Wine Obsession (Merlot, Cabernet Sauvignon, Syrah) offers up leather, spices, licorice, grilled herbs, plums and prunes. Early signs of advancement suggest this won’t be a long-term ager, but the wine is bold and juicy at this stage, and should be enjoyed over the coming decade. Anticipated maturity: 2011-2019. Score 90
The 2007 Chianti Classico Gherardino is a darker, fresher wine loaded with black cherries, minerals, spices and leather. Although the wine is quite ripe in style, it also possesses just enough freshness to provide balance and verve. The Gherardino spent 8 months in oak. Anticipated maturity: 2009-2015. Score 90
The 2006 Chianti Classico Riserva Castello di Monna Lisa is a big, dramatic wine bursting with sweet black cherries, licorice, menthol and sweet scents of French oak. This is a fairly rich, structured style of Chianti. As good as the Monna Lisa is, I had a slight preference for some of the lesser-oaked wines, as the wood tannins add a touch of astringency. Anticipated maturity: 2012-2021. Score 90
The cask-aged 2007 Chianti Classico Terre di Prenzano is a soft, generous Chianti with attractive red cherries, flowers and spices. In 2007 the Terre di Prenzano is an excellent value, as the wine is especially plump. Anticipated maturity: 2009-2012. Score 88
Vignamaggio’s 2007 Morino (Sangiovese) is a pretty, soft-textured wine ideal for casual drinking. Anticipated maturity: 2009-2010. Score 87
